WordPress.com is making it easier for students to learn how websites work.
Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, has launched WordPress.com Education, a free program for teachers and students.
Students get their own WordPress.com website, with a free .blog or .art domain. The plan also includes tools such as 6 GB storage, backups, staging sites, plugins, SFTP/SSH, and phpMyAdmin.
Teachers can use it for website-building classes, portfolios, or group projects. The first year is free, with no credit card or trial required.
After the first year, students can continue for $2 per month. If they choose not to pay, their website remains available on the free WordPress.com plan.
Automattic says it tested the program with 5,000 students across 27 countries. The goal is simple: help students learn practical web skills and prepare them for future jobs and entrepreneurship.
WordPress is not just teaching students how to use the web. It is giving them a place to build on it.
